In 2015, Margaret saw the need for more jazz events and venues on the south side of Chicago and the South Side Jazz Coalition was born. Margaret as Executive Director and the SSJC board of Chicago music professionals have in five short years established a free monthly jam session to continue the legacy of Earl LaVon Freeman. We are partners with the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, The Chicago Peace Fellows, Global Girls, The International Music Foundation, The Chicago Humanities Festival and the Jazz Institute of Chicago. The SSJC's annual fundraiser, A Jazzy Evening In Red has celebrated a host of south side musicians and activists, including Willie Pickens, Ari Brown, Hermaine Hartman, Orbert Davis, Frank and Pam Walton, and the legendary saxophonist Jimmy Ellis.
